Art Expo

The Art Expo recognizes the traditional and historical works of art practiced by Indigenous people. It is a call to action to artists to revive, create and honour traditions and gifts through submissions in multiple genre categories.  

The Art Disciplines that will be accepted in submissions to the program are:  

BEADWORK  traditional and contemporary styles of beading to create art and clothing
• QUILLWORK  the use of quills and paint used to design works of art and clothing
• STAR BLANKET  a quilt featuring indigenous designs representing honour and blessings 
 RIBBON SHIRT  hand sewn ribbon shirt with vibrant colours and cloth worn as regalia, for ceremony or special occasion
JINGLE DRESS  made of a cloth, velvet or leather base adorned with jingles made out of a shiny metal

Each category will be voted on by the public with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and all submissions will have their work displayed during the Manito Ahbee Festival International Pow Wow.

GENERAL RULES APPLICABLE TO EACH CATEGORY:

1) You may only submit ONE item;
2) Submissions will ONLY be accepted until May 18, 2017
3) You must provide a photo of the item you are submitting;
4) Only 20 items per category will be accepted. If we receive more than 20 registrations, a selection committee will decide which 20 will move on to the competition;
5) If your item is selected to compete, you must personally bring the item to the Manito Ahbee Art Expo registration table – Saturday, May 20, 10:00 a.m. NO items will be accepted after Grand Entry at 1:00 p.m.
6) Your item will be on display during the Manito Ahbee Pow Wow, Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21, 2017;
7) Winners will be announced on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at 3:00 pm.
8) The Manito Ahbee Festival will provide security for your item during the display, but cannot be held responsible for damaged or missing items;
9) There are no gender categories;
10) You must provide proof of ancestry; i.e. copy of status card, tribal affiliation, or self declaration;
11) There is no registration fee, however, you must purchase a ticket to the Manito Ahbee Festival International Pow Wow to gain entry into the RBC Convention Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
